Sony DSXS300BTX digital media receiver with iPod Direct Control via USB and bluetooth Review

Sony DSXS300BTX digital media receiver with iPod Direct Control via USB and bluetooth

I really like this unit. Maybe it's just because I think like the Sony guys when it comes to using a device - I don't know.
I installed the unit in my Jeep in about 5 minutes using a generic wiring harness adapter. I plugged my iPod into the Tune Tray and was scrolling through album titles in seconds. It does take a few seconds to "read" the iPod which is understandable since I have about 40GB of music on it.
I found it easy to set up the EQ; I used the Gravity preset first then tweaked it a little. I really liked the listening space feature which I set to front left seat since I drive by myself most of the time. It sounds great and is plenty loud for my vehicle.
This unit was a little more expensive than some that I considered but not too bad considering Bluetooth is included. Unlike the previous unlucky reviewer, I knew exactly what I was getting. I use the Tune Tray for my iPod and I connect my iPhone 3GS via Bluetooth to stream music from my iPhone. I have used all kinds of different apps with no issues so far (Napster, Pandora, etc.). Using a USB stick in the front USB input also works great - this is a better receiver than some others because it supports AAC files in addition to MP3.
Bottom line: I now have access to virtually unlimited music, and I can actually find what I want without cumbersome buttons and inefficient navigation.

JVC KD-HDR60 USB/CD Receiver with HD Radio Tuner and iTunes Tagging Review

JVC KD-HDR60 USB/CD Receiver with HD Radio Tuner and iTunes Tagging
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You can't beat this product for the price.
The FM quality is very good, very clear.
I can pick up stations that I was unable to receive before (too weak of a signal--maybe my other head unit was going bad?).
The HD is very cool; crystal clear and a wider stereo effect.
Downside to HD is that it drops out when signal is weak.
4GB usb thumbdrive worked flawlessly.
The overall sound is very good, in my opinion.
I have the option to upgrade to bluetooth and sat radio as well.
I am very satisfied.
On the downside, I find the menu and buttons cumbersome.
Some of the buttons are too small, the menus are not intuitive, etc.
The remote is VERY basic.
Still, I am very satisfied.
I give it a 5 because of the price and options.

Dual XR4110 AM/FM USB/SD/3.5-mm Mechless Receiver (Gray) Review

Dual XR4110 AM/FM USB/SD/3.5-mm Mechless Receiver (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Simple little device that is very flexible. The radio reception AM and FM is good both in the city and on the highway. Music from the SD card is the easiest way to use the "mech less" device. Be aware that the unit is limited to 16gb, not a real limitation with the SD card but I have an older generation ipod that is 20gb and it will not play through the USB port. However, I can use the auxiliary port with the ipod just fine. The built-in amplifier is not terribly powerful but does put out some good sound in my 1988 VW Vanagon which has a big interior space. I need to turn up the volume control almost all the way if I want it to play loudly. But there are jacks on the unit to connect an external amplifier. Hey, what can you expect for $40. All in all, I am quite satisfied and think that you get a lot of basic features for a cheap price. We shall see how it's long term durability is in a few years but I assume since it's all electronic (hence the term mech less)that there's not much that can go wrong from a wear standpoint. I would highly recommend this unit as a strong value and candidate to replace/upgrade any stock unit in your car.

This "mechless" receiver from Dual Electronics does away with mechanical playback entirely--no discs, no cassettes--just your digital music collection on USB devices or SD cards, your favorite digital music player through the auxiliary input, or some AM/FM radio.

USB/SD Playback The XR4110 features a convenient front-panel USB (1.1) port, for playback of your favorite MP3/WMA files. Connect USB devices with up to 16 GB capacities, and access hours of programming.

Right next to the USB port is a slot for SD cards. Support for SD cards is also 16 GB, giving you yet another storage option for your MP3s and WMAs. SD cards are even more convenient for quickly swapping out, for an almost infinite amount of music right there in your glove compartment.

Auxiliary Input Of course, most folks with a substantial digital music collection also have a favorite iPod or other MP3 player. The standard 3.5-mm mini jack aux input lets you connect and enjoy it. And yes, you can even hook up a portable CD player if you wanted some good old-fashioned skipping playback.

AM/FM Radio Listen to your favorite morning show or catch up on the traffic, news, or weather with the built-in AM/FM tuner. Eighteen FM and 12 AM presets let you instantly pull up your favorite stations.

Blue Display The XR4110 features a brilliant blue four-character display, along with matching blue button illumination.

Preamp Outputs The XR4110 has 60 watts of total power (15 watts x 4 channels), but if you'd like a little more, a pair of 2V preamp outputs is included for system expansion.

One-Year Warranty Dual offers a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Looks great in Scion TC. Being able to change the colors to match cockpit lights is great, and makes the unit look stock. Works flawlessly with ipod/iphone, and surprisingly well with bluetooth devices (I bought the additional adapter, you can find it for around $100 on the web). I was able to pair my Fiancees Android phone and stream music via bluetooth no problem, as well as make and receive calls without skipping a beat.
The sound quality of the unit is great! It definitely delivers more power to the speakers than the stock unit I had, the music transmits crisp and floats correctly between the tweeters, mids, and base. Sounds like I bought a whole new system for my car. The controls are fairly easy.
The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is lack of support for formats other than MP3/WMV in USB-flash mode (itunes likes to use AAC), and awkward navigation in head unit mode with ipods. This is due to how the stereo shows you numbers instead of names as you scroll through your library, which makes it difficult to know where you are. Not a big deal, the stereo gives you the option to navigate with the ipod which is how I prefer to do it anyway, but if you want to plug in your ipod and throw it into the glovebox and forget about it, this might not be the unit for you.
Overall this stereo exceeded my expectations in almost every way, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs a nice looking, nice sounding car stereo that will enable you to use almost any modern handheld.

JVC's double-DIN KW-XR610 is a double-DIN USB/CD receiver with front-panel connectivity for USB devices and iPod/iPhones, or other devices using the front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input. Expansion options include two preamp outputs (front, rear/subwoofer) and the easy addition of Bluetooth, HD or satellite radio with JVC add-ons.

Separated Variable Color The KW-XR610 features a Full-Dot LCD with JVC's Separated Variable-Color. Personalize your stereo to match your vehicle's interior illumination colors. Separated variable color lets you use two separate colors from a choice of over 30,000 options to create your own color scheme.
CD and MP3/WMA Playback Enjoy your favorite CDs or throw in burnt CD-Rs. You can also listen back to MP3/WMA data CDs, which allows you to throw hours of music on a single disc, with ID3 tag display of artist and track info. Or better yet, just drag your files to a USB thumb drive and plug it into the receiver's front-panel USB port.
A 24-bit analog-to-digital converter provides a solid sound base, and you can perfect it with the three-band EQ. For quiter listening, a Loudness function (in three different patterns) is provided, to ensure you still get some low-end and dynamics.
Front-Panel USB and Auxiliary Input Connect USB thumb drives, iPods/iPhones (see below), or other USB devices using the USB port. If you have another audio device that's not USB compatible, just use the standard 3.5mm auxiliary input and you're all set.
USB Audio and Video for iPod/iPhone The USB connection for iPod/iPhone provides clear digital sound directly from your iPod or iPhone. While your device is in use, it also receives a charge, so it's ready to step out of the car when you do.

With External Mode for iPod, you can also enjoy sound from your favorite iPod/iPhone apps in your vehicle, such as Internet radio, games, video, or navigation apps (compatibility differs by model).
AM/FM Radio The KW-XR610 features an AM/FM radio, with 6 AM and 18 FM presets, for quick access to your favorite stations.
The HS-IVi tuner features higher sensitivity, thanks to three IF bandwidths (wide, middle and narrow). It also includes AM Noise Canceller plus upgraded IF filters that help avoid the distortion caused by interference from adjacent stations.
HD/SAT Radio Ready If you'd like to add some serious entertainment options to your vehicle, add an optional HD or Satellite radio solution from JVC to take advantage of XM/SIRIUS programming or HD features like Multicasting or iTunes tagging.
Bluetooth Ready You can also add the JVC KS-BTA200 Bluetooth adapter to enjoy hands-free calling, voice recognition, phonebook transfer, and other great features for your cellular device.
50W x 4 MOSFET Amplifier The built-in 50W x 4 MOSFET amp provides plenty of power, but two 2.5V preamp output terminals (front, rear/subwoofer) are also provided for system building.

Pioneer DEH-2200UB CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control and USB Input Review

Pioneer DEH-2200UB CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control and USB Input
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this so I could use the USB slot and it works great. It loads all the songs in about 2 seconds (even with a large thumb drive of 4 GB or more of music) and then there is no wait time when scrolling through tracks. It clearly displays the song title and you can adjust it to display the track by title, album, etc. I'm not a huge stereo person so I don't care about amps and making my car vibrate, but I will say that my music plays clearly and I can turn it up much louder than I need too without my music being distorted in any way. The buttons are a little small, but you get used to them. I did plug my blackberry phone into the AUX port and it did play my songs. However, no information about the song was displayed on the stereo's display and I had to control my music through the Blackberry, which is a pain. Luckily, I plan on using the USB slot, this is just an FYI for those of you who don't have an ipod and wanted to know if other mp3 players could utilize the stereo's controls. All in all this was a great value for the money and it does everything that I need it to do.

Pioneer's DEH-2200UB is an affordable replacement for your bare-bones OEM system, giving you playback of WMA/MP3 files from disc or USB devices, optional direct iPod control, selectable green/red key illumination, and then some.

DEH-2200UB Features
Detachable Faceplate When you're away from your car, remove the face from the receiver for protection against theft.
The faceplate features a one-line, 10-character LCD display, along with a large rotary volume control.
Dual Color Illumination Choose the button illumination color from Red or Green to suit your vehicle--or mood.
CD-R/RW Playback Play back your favorite CDs and burnt CD-R/RW discs in the slot-loading CD player.
MP3 and WMA Playback Don't let your favorite music downloads languish on your computer hard drive. Burn them to a CD-R or CD-RW and play them right on the car stereo. Each disc you burn has the capacity to hold up to ten complete albums of MP3 music and twenty for WMA discs. Trust us, that's a lot of music.
iPod Made Easy It's easy! Simply plug your iPod directly into the unit using the optional CD-IU50 iPod cable, and you are ready to rock and roll. Listening to an artist that you just can't get enough of? Now you can hold the "List" button down and it will pop up folders containing that specific artist, album, or genre. You can also have your passenger control your music directly from the iPod.
Bring Your Music to Life with Advanced Sound Retriever This year you can hear the detail, warmth, and clarity the way the artist intended it, from all of the highly compressed MP3, WMA and AAC files playing on your CD player. By restoring data that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, we can make your music sound close to CD quality.
Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner Pioneer's legendary Supertuner IIID combines the best of digital and analog tuner technologies to reduce distortion to bring you exceptional FM and AM performance. If you live in an area where reception is weak, you'll hear a big improvement in signal strength. And when you're near tall buildings, Supertuner IIID reduces the effect of multi-path noise, which occurs when the signal is reflecting off of the buildings.
MOSFET 50W x4 Amplifier for the Power Hungry Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, delivering power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. And that doesn't just mean a boost in volume: it means that your music will be cleaner at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. Clean, efficient power that will rock your vehicle.
Inevitably, there will be those who still need more. The DEH-2200UB is therefore equipped with a pair of 2.2V rear preamp outputs for system expansion with external amps/speakers.
Get Plugged In Use the built-in AUX input for connecting any digital portable player and other external auxiliary devices. For extra-convenient access, the input is on the front panel.
Dial In Your Sound Tweak the sound to your liking with the on-board three-band EQ. A Loudness feature ensures ample low-end even during quiet listening, and standard balance/fader controls let you adjust the stereo image to suit your vehicle and preferences.

Pioneer MVH-P8200BT Multimedia AV Receiver with Built-in Bluetooth Review

Pioneer MVH-P8200BT Multimedia AV Receiver with Built-in Bluetooth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my MVH-P8200BT yesterday, and installed it. Installation was as normal as any other stereo, except the additional parking brake wire if you want to use the photo or video portion of this radio. Let me first start out by saying the AM & FM portion of the radio work pretty good, you can relatively easily seek to the next or previous station by pushing the knob left or right, or bring up your presets by pushing it up. The radio displays the RDS nicely as well. Changing sources (Radio, ipod/USB, or Aux input requires pressing the SRC button and rotating the tuning knob to the right or left to highlight the source and then pressing the tuning knob in. This in all is relatively easy to do in a timely manner.
Where the problem comes in, is using the ipod interface. it will start playing I believe the last song you had playing, but if you want to jump to another artist or lets say a podcast, be prepared to take your eyes off the road. You have to hit the Home button, and then rotate the knob one to the right and then press it in, and rotate the knob to highlight Songs or podcast or artist, and in my case lets do podcast, then the lost of podcast comes up and you have to rotate to the podcast and press the knob in, then it shows you the episodes, then you push it in. But on top of doing this, the tuning knob which is a 5 way control (left, right, up , down, and in) is very sensitive and plan on registering the wrong menu choice, and then having to hit the previous button on the display to pop out one menu and continue. You have to do this anything you want to change songs that are not the next immediate song that you can just press the right commander button to jump to next track.
So, I thought, well the nice remote has a left right up and down, and in feature as well. I will do this from the remote with a little more precision, well turns out 70% of the buttons on the remote don't even do anything. any function that requires you to turn that knob on the radio, still has to be done that way. the up and down will not allow you to scroll through menu items. the only real think I was able to do with the remote was volume, next track and previous track, and radio tuning.
If you thought it would be nice to be able to play videos from your ipod or photos, it requires a $40 cable with a usb and aux cable now hanging out of the front of the radio per the manual. I did put some photos on the SD card, but you cannot play music from SD while you do your slid show, and again its a cumbersome use of the scroll wheel to jog between music and photos on the SD setup. You are able to play the slide show while listening to the radio.
Now for the real good, I think the best integration with this unit is the bluetooth with the iphone or probably many other phones, I was able to easily pull up contacts, and you can quickly choose a letter of the starting letter of the contact and click through to dial the appropriate name and if you want to call mobile or home. And the audio with the included mic is excellent. it will mute your music and continue it when your call is done.
The radio looks really good and thats what lead me immediately to this model, but I am ever so sorry I did not test it out before doing the install. I for sure thought the short comings would be overcome by using the remote, but you had no way to test it that well in the store. The remote is useless for iPod navigation or navigation or any SD media. I did get a chance to watch many tutorials online on the Alpine receiver 305 which was made for iPod and it has the navigation the way I would prefer it, thought it does lack characters and you have to scroll most titles, this pioneer was able to display a good character set. Oh and speaking of a feature that Alpine has, it has a nice readable clock. The clock on this is small, there is a feature you can turn on to show a nice clock, but you have to turn it on every time, it doesn't stay on as an option. Even with the radio in off mode, it should show the nice larger clock IMHO, but it doesn't you have to fight menus again to call this up.
To summarize, much fighting with a poor jog wheel to drill through menus to make common settings to what you want to listen to. They made it simple to change source and volume and next and previous track everything else gets deep in menus that will take usually 6 to 10 seconds to drill through menus to do, this is not safe in a car and the remote which could have assisted in this matter has much less ability. I think if you can do a double din the AVH-P3200 double din touch screen, is sooo much easier to navigate and for not more then $120 more in general, very upgradable and the addition items you get (CD/DVD slot and DVD playback, you wont be trying to convert stuff to Divx, and you can burn your stuff or bring along your DVD's and you have a bigger screen.

Definitely recommending this product to my friends.
Pros:
1. GREAT SOUND! What a difference from my previous stereo.
2. USB works great. I've tested with an 8GB drive but it probably can handle much higher capacities.
3. Sleekness looks really good without becoming a gaudy light show.
4. Plays songs reliably from USB (other stereos randomly cut songs way short)
5. Surprise feature: Supports limited RDS. While not a feature called out, you can view text from a radio station for song title and station information. However, there are no advanced RDS features enabled (ex: can't scan for radio stations by genre).Cons (all minor):
1. Doesn't ship with a faceplate case (come on Pioneer, please spring for the 60 cents of plastic).
2. No microphone mute option during a Bluetooth phone call.
3. Microphone sound quality is good but not great. If you are extra finicky you can use a different mic. I'm sticking with the factory mic.
4. Display does not alternate through Artist, Album, Song Title, etc. You have to explicitely change these yourself.
5. The manual is written so-so. There are a few things that are not explains well (ex: what is "private mode") and sometimes it says you can "press the M.C." and that "pushing the M.C." also does the same thing. Overall, the manual is mostly ok.
6. When you are in Repeat:Track mode and want to jump to another track you want to repeat on, the unit changes to Repeat:Folder instead of staying in Repeat:Track mode. Seems odd to me.
7. Does not ship with a remote control (optional upgrade), but I've never used the remotes from my past stereos anyways.

Pioneer's DEH-6200BT is a CD, digital media, and iPod receiver with built-in Bluetooth. Enjoy the convenience of hands-free calling, built right into the unit. Expand your options by adding HD Radio, XM Satellite Radio or Sirius Satellite Radio, and expand your system with three RCA preamp outputs.

DEH-6200BT Features
Fed up with your Bluetooth headset? Here's a better hands-free solution. Enjoy the convenience of having Bluetooth built right into the unit, with no additional hands free car kits or other accessories needed. The unit acts like a speakerphone, channeling the sound through your car speakers which makes the call sound better. It also automatically mutes your music so that you'll never miss a call.
CD-R/RW Playback Play back your favorite CDs and burnt CD-R/RW discs in the slot-loading CD player.
MP3/WMA/AAC Playback Don't let your favorite music downloads languish on your computer hard drive. Burn them to a CD-R or CD-RW and play them right on the car stereo. Enjoy hours of your favorite tunes MP3, WMA, and AAC audio content.
You can also just throw some files on a USB thumb drive and insert it directly in the front panel USB input.
iPod Made Easy It's easy!
Connect, Tag, and Download Have you ever heard a great song on the radio, but couldn't remember what it was called or who sang it when you went to go look for it later? Now you don't have to worry about missing out on great music. iTunes Tagging gives you the power to "tag" all of your favorite songs without having to scramble for a piece of scrap paper in the car, then later preview or purchase music at iTunes Music Store.

A better way to control your music Sick of using buttons to search through your songs? Now you can scroll through your music with greater ease using the 7-way rotary commander.
The DEH-6200BT is also ready for expansion, with two sets of 2V RCA preamp outputs (front, rear/subwoofer) for system expansion with external amps/speakers, and a two-way crossover with separate high and low pass settings.
Get Plugged In Use the built-in AUX input for connecting any digital portable player and other external auxiliary devices. For extra-convenient access, the input is on the front panel.
Dial In Your Sound Tweak the sound to your liking with the on-board five-band graphic EQ. A Loudness feature ensures ample low-end even during quiet listening, and standard balance/fader controls let you adjust the stereo image to suit your vehicle and preferences.

Yamaha RX-V567BL 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Each, Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V567BL 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Each, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my old TV died I replaced it with a new HD LCD. One of the things that bothered me was audio sync with the picture. I started checking into the problem and found that the sound being sent to my faithful old Technics receiver was being decoded faster than the video sent to the TV was. After some research and listening at local retailers I decided on the Yamaha RX-V567.
Here is why:
-HDMI 1.3 compatible. Syncs audio and video for high definition sources.
-Passive HDMI switching. Switches sources even when the receiver is off.
-Scene settings. Allows you to set an input, sound field program, initial volume level, etc for each of 4 scene buttons.
-YPAO. Makes setup of speaker levels a snap. Not so great for setting equalizer settings though - but that's just an opinion.
-Sound delay. Up to 320 ms sound delay that can be set manually.
-Direct Sound Processing Mode. Shuts off all unused portions of the receiver and processes surround stream using only the DAC and amplifier.
-Customizable Input labels. Set a custom label for any input.
-Tons of customizable options from setting speaker impedance, to allowing the use of multiple remotes, to an 8 band parametric equalizer that can be set differently for each input. As a matter of fact there are so many options that after a month of owning the receiver I don't think I have seen them all. Don't feel intimidated by this though, the receiver is configured so you won't need to mess with a whole lot of this stuff if you don't want to.
-Yamaha amplifiers. Awesome sound and plenty of volume.
-DAC processes a ton of digital standards up to and including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD and switches automatically or can be set for each source.
Things I didn't like:
-The only thing I didn't like was the fact the manual came on CD.
-The remote has lots of smallish buttons and no back light. A bit disappointing as it is expected to be used as a universal remote.
Also Available:
-Optional IPod dock and Bluetooth receiver. These are available but I myself don't own either. I have a Logitech Squeezebox for playing digital music as I don't care for compressed music sources.
-Sound Field processing. Again something I don't use but its there.
I am very pleased with the receiver so far. It has surpassed my expectations in many ways not the least of which is the ability to customize just about everything about every input on the thing. Sound quality is excellent and setup is quick and simple - it took longer to straiten out the YPAO cable than it did to set it up, and the sound field setup is excellent.
This is the first Yamaha electronics device I have ever owned and I am very impressed with it so far.

I don't know where to begin about this DVD Player. I've installed it and have been testing it for a while now. This player is awesome. I put it in a 2001 grand prix gt. I was worried that the screen was going to hit my air vents, but you can adjust the angle of the screen. I have not used the bluetooth, or sirius. This unit does not come with an iPod cable, but you can run your computer cable to the usb port on this and control it from the screen with the ipod receiving a charge as well (you must buy a specialized cable from clarion to hook directly into your ipod). The unit does allow you to upgrade to navigation later on if you want to add that, as well as a rear view camera to be added later on as well. I do have 2 12" Rockford p3's hooked up to this as well as a 1000W amp, and this unit handles them beautifully, well maybe even a little too well because of how loud my car can get. I did ground my cable and am able to watch movies with the flip of a switch. It is quite easy to do (I know almost nothing about cars and I did this myself). There are so many features about this player I haven't even gotten to explore yet. The only downside to this player, is that if you are listening to music, lets say Metallica's S&M album, where the music is continuous from track to track, this player does pause between tracks when the album is supposed to be seamless between tracks. Still, overall, I'm more than happy to have this DVD player in. A lot of jealous friends

Yamaha RX-V367BL 5.1 Channel 500 Watt AV Receiver (Each, Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V367BL 5.1 Channel 500 Watt AV Receiver (Each, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We had a very old audio only receiver and were looking to replace it (almost 10 year old technics). We picked up the Yamaha RX-V367, even though there were no reviews, since the receiver was just released, and it was in our price range (200 to 300). So far we are happy with the new receiver; it is connected to the satellite box, xbox, and blu ray.
Speaker set up: Set of Polk Rti8 (left right and center), and klipsch Klipsch Synergy Series SS.5 rear surround (left and right). The sound coming from the speakers was MUCH better than from our ancient receiver.
Not a fan of the Sound Field Programs, seems too much like a gimmick, and only adds an echo depending on what setting (one setting might effect the vocals more, or another setting might effect the music), but I imagine some people would enjoy that. Has many audio processing options, works great with Netflix streaming, set it to 5ch stereo and it will work great; can clearly listen to what's playing (netflix only streams in 2ch stereo). Mainly use the "Straight" audio processing setting (for xbox and blu ray), I assume the receiver doesn't add any extra "audio goo", and plays direct from the source.
Good video quality, no noticeable video deterioration. Yamaha says it's compatible with HDMI 1.4 and will support 3D (with a firmware upgrade). Not that interested in 3d TVs anyways.
Clear and easy to use menu system (compared to my old technics receiver), competent directions, fairly user friendly.
Has 4 HDMI inputs which was much better than many of the competitors in the same price range. We didn't test the FM/AM tuner, and only connected HDMI and RCA from computer. We were also swayed by the extra bluetooth adapter so we can listen to music (and hopefully stream Hulu audio) wirelessly from the computer (and get rid of the airport express). Will update review after getting bluetooth.

You get what you pay for with this dvd reciever. In my experience, it does everything it claims to, but not very well and not very easily. The bluetooth function works ok as a hands-free device. I have installed a backup camera and it works well. I have had no problems loading or unloading dvd's and/or cd's. The menu's are absolutely horrible and there are a bunch of functions that can only be accessed with the remote control. The user manual that comes with the unit is a joke.
As advertised is does have Ipod control onscreen, but it is barebones at most. It brings up a screen that sort-of looks like the ipod screen and allows you to choose artist, album, genre, etc.... It starts at the beginning of the alphabet, but won't let you scroll backwards through it so it takes forever to get to the later artists. You can only play one album from an artist at a time and it will not automatically go to the next album when the first is done playing. It takes you back to the screen to choose an artist, album, genre, etc... thus making you go through the lengthy process of scrolling back down to the artist and manually choosing the next album.
The USB input is ok. I have a 16 gb flash drive with music and movies on it and it plays both the music and video just fine. Again, the user controls leave a lot to be desired, but overall it does what it says it will.
Another negative is that it seems that the unit is slightly larger than the typical double din unit. I have purchased two different install kits and have found that the unit is slightly to large to fit in the install kit. I had to take my dremel and open up the hole in the install kit in order to make it fit. This leaves the install looking less than professional. I have installed many many different car stereos and have never come up against this problem before now.
I had never purchased anything from Boss Audio before and thought I would take a chance on this unit since it had all the features I wanted at less than half the price of name brand units, but now I wish I had waited and saved enough to purchase a nicer unit.
Overall, if you have the money it is definately worth it to go with a nicer name brand unit. On the other hand, if you have a small budget and a lot of time to play with it to figure out how to use it, this unit does have a lot of features (even if they are difficult to access).

I just purchased one of these units at a local merchant and so far so good! I just wanted something cheap and simple to upgrade my factory stereo. I wanted bluetooth but there are too many head units that have horrible bluetooth capabilities so I decided to go without (I may add the extra unit later on this one).
This unit is equipped with a 7 band EQ as well as a subwoofer level control, both are MUST haves in my book. So far after one day I am very pleased with the sound quality! Crisp Highs and zero distortion that I can hear. I have been out of the car audio game for about 10 years now so I was clueless going in and for $125 I wasn't expecting much but I must say I am pleasantly suprised! I still have my factory Dodge speakers in and also added a 12" Orion Sub/Amp in the trunk. The menu's can be a bit tricky but after only one day (2 hours) I think I have them down pat. If you're looking for something simple for an up-grade to your existing factory tunes I would definitely recommend this unit. A Kenwood deck with similar features goes for almost $100 more and I can't see that there would be that much of a difference in sound and I'm not looking to enter any sound competitions anytime soon. Bottom line: if you are looking for an upgrade from the factory head unit (junk) installed by the manufacturer..for the price, this head unit is a steal!

Pioneer VSX-1020-K 7.1 Home Theater Receiver Review

Pioneer VSX-1020-K 7.1 Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tend to do a lot of research before making large purchasing decisions and so far this receiver is receiving a pretty rosy reception! Its predecessor, the 1019, was CNET's and Gizmodo's top mid-range receiver. Both reviewers had just as high hopes for the 1020, and Gizmodo already called it the best receiver $550 can buy, saying the 1020 "hit the sweet spot" that gave the most bang for buyer's buck.
The critics I read all raved about the excellent sound quality, but the 1020 brings some new offerings to the table for a mid-range receiver.
In short, the most valuable features you get with this model that you don't get with the next step down are:
1. A fifth HDMI port in back, an extra sixth in front (for digital cameras, computers, etc.).
2. Analog video upscaling (which I don't care too much about since most of my content is HD already or played through an upscaling player).
3. The iContolAV iPhone app. Very cool for controlling volume and switching inputs. Works simply by having your receiver connected to ethernet and your iPhone connected to the network via WiFi. A few times the app has had trouble properly connecting, but it usually works well.
4. Internet radio with programmable stations, which is cool, though you can't currently control the station selections from the iPhone App, unfortunately.
5. A color configuration interface output to your TV via the HDMI output. I can't imagine trying to configure all my speakers without seeing a graphical representation of their location on screen.
That last feature feature, the HDMI 1.4 ports that support 3D, the 7.1 surround capabilities, excellent sound quality and the iPhone App are what made the VSX-1020 the clear choice for me. I also appreciated the automatic calibration with the included microphone and the included iPod cable/compatibility, but those weren't as strong of selling points.
The only negatives of note for me is that the little front port cover is a little cheap. It's not even a door, simply a little plastic piece that pops out if you push one side. I, like others, have also experienced the issue where the receiver switches to TV/Sat when first turned on, but I've yet to determine whether that's a problem with the receiver itself or my Harmony universal remote (I'll update the review as I get more information).
One last tip to buyers, however. If you're considering listening to your phone's music over Bluetooth by buying the $99 AS-BT100 adapter, I'd consider buying a $99 Apple Airport Express instead (assuming your music is managed through iTunes). It lets you stream music from your computer to the receiver over WiFi and control what's playing via iTunes or Apple's robust "Remote" iPhone app, but more importantly the Airport Express acts as a USB print server and a one port wireless bridge (something that lets you connect wired devices to a wireless network).
That wireless bridge capability is especially valuable, since you'll need it or something similar for internet radio and iControlAV iPhone app support if your VSX-1020 receiver isn't close to your wireless router (mine isn't). Buying the Airport Express kills two birds with one stone.
UPDATE:
A few ideas have been thrown out by other Amazon posters to help alleviate the issue with the receiver switching to TV/Sat when it first turns on. The first idea is to change the receiver's settings thusly:
"1 Press Receiver , then press Home Menu.
2 Select `System Setup', then press ENTER.
3 Select `Other Setup', then press ENTER.
4 Select `HDMI Setup', then press ENTER.
5. Set Control to 'Off'."
The second idea is to adjust your TV settings like so.
"Go into Menu under HDMI-CEC and turn it Off. If the set is a Samsung look for AnyNet+ (default is normally On) and turn it Off."
I'm still having issues going directly to a given HDMI input when the unit first power on (going to "HDMI Input 1" simply toggles the current HDMI input instead of going directly to the one you want), but I've made the quirk tolerable by programming one of the buttons on my universal remote to toggle inputs, so it's easy to fix.

I had this installed by local car stereo installer. Sounds very good. Good base response. Could use more audio modes besides just basic base/treble. Come on, how much more would it cost to add a little DSP processing? Bluetooth synched with my iPhone with no problems. Controls were a little tiny so I would not recommend trying to play with it too much while driving. The included remote should suffice once you learn where all the buttons are and what they do. I inserted a 2GB SD card and it took a few seconds to catalog all the songs and played it without a hitch. Only had MP3 files so I can't confirm if it will play any other formats.

Pioneer FH-P8000BT Double-Din In-Dash CD/MP3/WMA/AAC Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth, iPod Control, and Rear USB Input Review

Pioneer FH-P8000BT Double-Din In-Dash CD/MP3/WMA/AAC Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth, iPod Control, and Rear USB Input

This video shows the basic operation of the unit, since it's hard to explain.
The biggest pro for me is the sound. My stock speakers sounded good with the factory head unit, but they sound like brand new high end speakers with the Pioneer.
A close second is the feature set. The iPod integration is the best that I saw in any unit, and it sure beats the axillary input mod kit that I was running beforehand. The sound from the iPod is great. Also keep in mind that it's a USB input, not just an iPod input. Plug in an external hard drive or thumb drive and you're in buisness, too. The addition of the Bluetooth connectivity was a major selling point, and it delivers a great convenience that I would really miss now that I'm used to it. I can leave my phone out of reach (in the trunk even) and I can still answer it if it rings.
The biggest con is the user interface- it does take a bit to learn the ins and outs, but once you do, very few times is it a bother (the 'pause' option is buried in the function submenu, which is annoying, but since the unit automatically pauses the music for incoming / outgoing calls, it's only a problem in, say, drive thru's).
The pros VASTLY outweigh the cons, and the price is far below what I would expect for a unit with this feature set. That gets this unit a 5 Star rating - iPod, Bluetooth, CD, HD & Satellite Radio ready- there really aren't any features left for you to want!
I purchased it with the wiring harness and the dash kit for my 2005 Mazda3 and it looks quite nice. Check out the video!

Link Search While listening to a specific artist you can hold "List" button down and it will pop up folders containing that specific artist.

For those who'd like a bit more power, three 4V preamp outputs are also included for system expansion (front/rear/sub).

Plugable USB 2.0 Wireless Audio Adapter and Receiver (SYNIC chipset) Review

Plugable USB 2.0 Wireless Audio Adapter and Receiver (SYNIC chipset)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It took me quite a long time to find a product that would transfer wireless audio from my computer in one room to my speakers in another (without the need to install software), and this does exactly that! Not only does it transfer across my entire condo (approx 60 feet, through 3 walls), but it works with Linux too! Two thumbs way up.
At first I wasn't sure how to switch my audio output on my Linux operating system (from the jack to USB), but then the customer support at Plugable.com gave me a couple suggestions (under 24 hour response), and I was set. Of course it was no fault in the product, just my own computer. A+ customer service!
