(More customer reviews)Although this remote is not perfect, I found it to be a very adaptable, useful device. I have had few of the problems cited in another review of this product. For example, I was easily able to teach it the specialized buttons from my various other remotes, including an Apple Remote--the trick, which it took me only a couple of minutes to discover, is to hold the IR emitting end of the remote very close to the UnityRemote device and then to press and release (not hold) the button you want to teach to the UnityRemote. And, although I have experienced a few unexpected quits while using the device, they have been relatively rare.
In any case, I expect crashes and confusions to get rarer as the software is updated. Note, by the way, that the software is very easy for a user to update. In the short time that I've had the UnityRemote, I have already received and installed an update, which was delivered and installed just like any other iOS app update: you download it right from Apple's App Store wirelessly, or download it via iTunes and install it automatically the next time you sync your iOS device. You don't even have to wonder if an update is available: the App Store tells you when one shows up.
What I like best about the UnityRemote is how easy it is to create custom keypads for various activities. With other universal remotes, I have usually had to have the manual at hand, and to go through certain arcane keypresses or gestures in order to move buttons around and rename them. The UnityRemote app, on the other hand, is an iOS app, and uses the same gestures and conventions that all of the other iOS apps use, so editing keypads is a very familiar-feeling process.
