The Logitech M505 Wireless Mouse is a good mouse, with basic features. This mouse can used equally well by lefties or righties. It can work when used as a plug and play mouse or can be customized using Logitech's SetPoint software. And it runs on two AA batteries that will supposedly run for up to 15 months.
In terms of features, this mouse is sold at a premium to similar models. But the killer feature is the integration with the new "unifying" receiver, which lets you use one nano-sized receiver with multiple Logitech wireless accessories. I'm not sure yet if other vendors like Kensington will also have compatible devices that can be used across brands, but being able to only use one USB plug on my laptop for both my keyboard and mouse has been a great positive for me. I use this unit along with the Logitech K350 2.4Ghz Wireless Keyboard, which is akin to the original Logitech Wave Keyboard in its design.
If they make a version of the Logitech MX 1100 Cordless Laser Mouse that is compatible with the new receiver, I will probably upgrade. Until then, this is the mouse I use on my home machine. Considering the price difference is relatively minimal, the Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse I use with my laptop is probably worth looking into for those who don't need the unifying receiver. But similar to the MX 1100, I'm sure that an updated version of that mouse will be coming out soon as well.
PROS
+ Balanced design works equally well for lefties or righties
+ Runs off 2 AA batteries (Logitech claims they will last up to 15 months)
+ The unifying receiver allows just one receiver for a multiple wireless devices
+ Nano-sized receiver is small enough to be left plugged in to laptops
+ The on / off switch on the mouse's underside allows you to save battery life
+ Indicator light lets you know when you have weak batteries
+ Works well with Windows Vista & Windows 7 (Still have to test it with Mac OS X)
+ The device is plug and play without installing software (installing the "unifying" software is required to use multiple devices with one receiver)
+ Keys are programmable with optional SetPoint software
+ Curved rubber sides provide a nice gripping surface
+ The scroll wheel allows for side to side scrolling
CONS
-- The minimal arch makes the mouse ideal for those with small to medium sized hands
-- The mouse lacks any extra function keys, even "forward" and "back"
-- The list price is a premium considering the basic features
-- The scroll wheel doesn't flow freely for *hyper-scrolling* like the Vx Nano
-- The mouse buttons are very *clicky*
THE UNIFYING RECEIVER
The "unifying" receiver is a very nice feature. It's nano-sized, just like the VX Nano. The flexibility of being able to add more devices to your computer without having to use multiple receivers is a huge plus that saves USB ports and simplifies your accessories. It works on the 2.4 GHz frequency according to the packaging, and the range was a pleasant surprise.
While it won't work with older devices, it currently works with the following:
1. Logitech M505 Wireless Mouse (this product)
2. Logitech K350 2.4Ghz Wireless Keyboard
3. Logitech Performance Mouse MX
4. Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX
5. Logitech Wireless Keyboard K340
In order to add another device, you must go download the unifying software from Logitech. It will then walk you through restarting turning your devices off and on again to pair your additional device.
CONCLUSION
This mouse is ideal for those who just need a basic wireless mouse but plan on using multiple accessories now or in the future. If you need a mouse and keyboard now, this is a great unit when paired with the K350. The price is a slight premium but it's worth it if you plan to use multiple accessories based upon the added convenience. If you don't need the unifying receiver, then strongly consider the Vx Nano. It's only a slight premium to this model and is worth it for the extras if you can afford the higher price tag.
Enjoy.
